The topic; Think of ONE word that is a personal strength that you have honed or
built from experience. What sort of life experiences helped you build
this strength? Perhaps you learned this when you were young; perhaps a
more recent experience has shaped you. How is this strength a tool that
helps you teach?

DIFFERENT
I like to look at things differently. For example, this is one of my own
photos below.......Sometimes we have to zoom in when we look at things, other times
step back for a larger view, or look from the side, the top, or even
stand on our heads!

I would start with the question "How would you reduce this mountain to a mole hill". The answer I would look for is "One shovel at a time". This would lead me in to a discussion on how to tackle a programming project or how to troubleshoot a problem in a program. You accomplish both sets of tasks by taking it apart in to its individual pieces. This way you have changed your Mountain of a task in to a mole hill set of steps you can solve.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the mole hill!
ReplyDeleteI might use it to think about how the world is never black and white, but there´s always an in-between position where most people stay. I would use the picture to illustrate different viewpoints about some current affair, especially a controversial one. I might group people in colors, then ask them to explain their opinion on a situation and start a debate on that.
I mostly teach computer programming languages...this is hard. I do teach a course that is more theory - systems analysis and design. There are layers to understanding requirements. It would be interesting to see what my students would say about this picture in that light. I also do courses where students are in teams. And the teams are related - each developing a part of a system. So it works there too.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see these ideas!
DeleteOMG, the first thing that occured to me is that this photo will do for explaining degrees of comparison. You can upload this picture and ask your students to share ideas on what grammar topic is the next to be discussed.
